Final Draft Notes for the Final

I think that I will choose the "History of comic book artist/writers" piece. It will include
  • hopefully pictures of the artist/writers of the most popular comics
  • it would be in a timeline format
  • have random images of the famous comic figures
I will use images and a poster board for the project.

Jackson Pollock movie viewing

I can't believe that Teri, the documentary's main character, would be so prideful to let 2 million dollars and then 9 million dollars go like she did. I know that should stand up for what u believe in, but there comes a time when u need money to live and she wasn't in my opinion making smart choices. I thought that the movie was very entertaining and and informative. I know that if I was in her shoes, I would have sold at the first 2 million dollar offer, but that's just me.

Rough Draft Notes for Final Project

I haven't decided on what to do for my final project yet, but here some ideas that I narrowed down:
  • The history of comics
  • I-Phone humor piece
  • Evil warding necklace
I will try to have something more concrete before the end of Wednesday.

Art 21 viewing

I liked both artists we saw because they each had different objectives in there work. I'm more familiar with Alfredo Jaar because of the lecture I saw but, Judy Pfaff was very interesting also. Her art seem like it was more personal and Jaar's was more political. Anyway, both artist broaden my mind in art to hopefully make me a better artist.

Museum viewing

I enjoyed the trip to the Mint Museum of Craft and design because of the neat quilts that were on display. The gift shop had some pretty cool items there also. The only damper on the day was that it was raining all day. Anyway, I would not mind going again because it was a good experience.

James Nachtwey film viewing

I enjoyed the film because it shows a person who is truly dedicated to his work. I was impressed with all of the pictures because it showed real emotion. He knew when to take the picture at the right moment and also knew when to put the camera down to not show everything.

Self-Evaluation for Humor

I thought that project was very fun to do. I loved everyone's idea of humor and it seem like it was a lot of sarcastic humor. If there was anything I needed to improve on, it would be getting a bigger afro that would have made it very funny.

Final Draft Notes for Humor

I decided to do an afro with random items in it.
  • Personal experience
  • Jumbo size afro
  • Random items in the afro

Humor Rough Draft Notes

I want to make a wacky invention that takes away the uses of storages for:
  • school supplies
  • grooming materials
  • personal items
I want to use an afro (jumbo size) to have all of those things in. If I can use anything else, or if there is another idea I can use, it will be included in the final draft of notes.

Charles Ray Text Notes

Before Reading
Did he actually make that mannequin?
Is that firetruck even real?
I wonder what is inside the clock?

During Reading
His work is successful by the audience's reactions and actions.
He wants to create ongoing tension with his work.
It sounds like that he wants to be a rebel or different from the norm.

After reading
How successful can someone be when you want to create controversy/tension that is ongoing in one's art?
What makes art so different for one artist to another?
Why does art have to be so "weird" in the sense of being different from society?

Mint Museum Trip

That was my first time going to the Mint Museum, and I can honestly say that it was a good experience for me because that was my first time actually seeing all different kinds of art. I liked the larger than life piece that had realism mixed with a little abstraction. I was familiar with a lot of the artist that work was there; there were some I did not know about, but it did not take away from the experience. I would not mind going again because, it would help me as an artist to get ideas for artwork in the future.

Self Evaluation for Activism project (Negativity)

I really thought that we did a good job on this project because it was a good topic to do a brochure with. It was a good thing that we decided to use a brochure as our project because we wanted it to be "professional-like". I would probably read it before printing because of the grammatical errors and the size of the images. We could have used a fake picture that was angry and it may have looked better. I don't think that a poster would have done it justice because we did not want to stop people from walking, we wanted them to have the brochure with them and when they are at home, they can read and relate. It is no guarantee that they will remember what they saw on a poster because it was only read once. I would love to do a project again as a group because it was a new experience and it got me to see how others worked and how to accomplish an objective together.

Final Draft Notes for Activism (Negativity)

We decided to do a brochure for our art; it will include:
  • a cover image (Bitching and Moaning)
  • a story about someone who's having a shitty day with an image to show him
  • quotes that people use to show negativity or at least thinking them
  • a message for the readers in the end
We also are going to video us passing the brochures out to show action that we are taking about negativity.

Rough Draft Notes

We decided on making a brochure on quotes and images full of negativity
  • the template
  • quotes
  • images (maybe digital)
  • maybe a video that show us giving the brochures out to random people
I will include more in the final draft because we are still planning and getting more ideas.

Sonja Hinrichsen viewing

I thought that the her pieces are very good and very well thought out. I can almost guarantee that I would have never came up with some of the ideas that she has done. I liked how she showed us her resume to understand how artist should have their resumes. She had a lot of exhibitions and awards that made her credentials very impressive. I liked her piece of her walking with the text in the puddle, it was very unique that the text would ripple when it would leave.

Text Notes 3

Daniel Joseph Martinez notes
Before reading
Why is politics such a dangerous field for artist?
What is a "Tactical Media Strategist"?
Are those tags real or digitally made?
During reading
Martinez created the job title of "Tactical Media Stategist," which I think that his job is to defy rules and disrupt conventions.
He is a freelance artist-activist. (very political)
He really made people believe that he hurt himself in his photographs. I think that it was pretty cool that some artist can create virtual wounds, scars, stitches, and organs that were all over his body.
After reading
How long will he wait to be a respected artist?
Does he enjoy teaching art?
Why does have shows to not try to sell his work?

Wenda Gu notes
Before reading
Is that really blood in his enigma of blood piece?
How big is that font in the Temple of heaven piece?
What is on the floor in that beyond joy and sin piece?
During reading
I think that his Oedipus Refound pieces are symbolic to Oepidus Rex.
Gu has devoted his career to unifying the planet beset without quarrels and conflicts. (wow)
He has a smart idea in becoming friends first with your collectors because art is a business and in order to make money, people buy your work; for Gu it may be an easier sale because he may have some idea in what the collectors want because of that relationship.
After reading
Can I live in 2 countries to make better art?
Why doesn't he do work most of the time in his studios or maybe is it less or more convenient to have those studios?
Is his mission in life a fantasy or could it be a reality?

Self Evaluation 2 and Class Evaluation

I feel like that this piece turned out good for the most part but there are things that I could do to make it better. I probably could have made the images blend into one image instead of the 7 blocks that made up the figure. Also I thought that I could have added a phrase for each image that could have made it more understandable. I really liked the "Bandwagon" piece because of the innocence it shows towards the younger generation who don't know about cigarettes and the harm it could cause. The rest were good, I thought that the class as a whole did good because of all time and effort that was seen in the work, it shows how serious we took the project and the subject matter. At first, I thought that the project was confusing and I could not finish in time but it worked out okay, so I just look at as a way for me to improve with my overall creative thinking process.

Architecture/ Foundations Viewing

I like those Oriental architecture paintings in the lobby of the Storrs building, very colorful with the watercolor. Also was very impressed with the Spiderman dots figure drawing, showed a lot of contrast.

Text Notes 2

Thomas Kinkade notes
Before reading
What canvas did he use for Everett's Cottage?
How long did it take for him to be established as an artist?
What type artist is he or movement did he belong to?
During reading
His work was pretty much influenced by the majority of society.
His paintings are very detailed and realistic.
Wow, he gets 5% of net sales from the Media Arts Group, I guess its safe to say that he is pretty rich.
Very good commercial artist
After reading
I wonder if I can be as successful as Kinkade?
Is lithograph really a good canvas to create artwork on?

Vanessa Beecroft notes
Before reading
Are those mannequins or real women?
Is she apart of an art movement?
Does her work get influenced by an earlier artist?
During reading
The women in her piece are professional models. (they were real)
She constucts her artistic self by the criteria valued by society.
I guess she wanted to show the society's view on a perfect women
She considers herself as postfeminist
After reading
Could she have tried to illustrate her theme in a different way?
Is this what it means to be a feminist?
I think that this is a powerful piece and that we as a society should be aware of the inequality that happens everyday to women and take steps to change for the better. I know that not every person who has features that we as a society consider beautiful is beautiful.

Rough Draft Notes for Project 2

Consumption ideas on Greed
  • money
  • Dvds, CDs
  • sports
  • number#1
  • school
Consumption media: digital image or images

Consumption actions: 1 big image of 5 hands with the elements in each hand or 5 images with hands that have elements to display consumption

Self Evaluation on Project 1

I know I could have done better with my choice of media. I could have used watercolor paint instead of color pencil. Also, the images could have been bigger because it felt weird that everyone else had larger projects than me. Overall, I was shocked that it turned out to be pretty good piece and I felt good because it was one of the few times that I thought outside the box. I hope the next project is manageable.

Art Show Viewing

Those were some great pieces of art that I have ever seen. I like how each artist had a different objective they were trying to express with their work. I can only wish that I can accomplish something like that.

Monday, September 7, 2009

After reading
Photography really can show the depths of human emotions
Does death or sadness really open up a person to their environment or does it close them even further to the darkess corners of one's mind?
After reading, I wonder if I can discover my "artistic self"?
During reading
A lot of the artist that we looked at today: Walker, Smith, Soh, and now Goldin all have death as an element in some of their work
Goldin has some good friends that would let her photograph them in private, emotional moments
Compound entity of tight knit relationships=Goldin's artistic self

Text Notes

Nan Goldin text notes
Before reading
How is she showing an "artistic self" when there is two women in the bathroom sitting?
Is there anything private anymore?
How much controversy did her photos bring?
Goldin has a lot friends willing to let her photograph them in private, emotional moments.
